- Maintain a successful, small, woman-owned freelance editing, writing, and communications consulting business with a wide variety of clients (see client list).
- Edit technical reports, program and overview documents, Web site content, journal and magazine articles, brochures, proposals, and books for grammar, consistency, completeness, and readability.
- Function as senior editorial consultant for several clients, which includes managing the editing/proofing process and ensuring editorial quality on high-profile projects.
- Compile, edit, and rewrite in-house style guides for client organizations.
- Write newsletter, journal, and magazine articles, along with brochures, reports, and Web site content.
1987-2000, NREL, Golden, CO, Senior Communicator I, Center for Transportation Technologies and Systems (CTTS)
Held progressively responsible positions in communications during a 13-year tenure. Highlights follow:
- Wrote, edited, and produced communications products designed to present scientific research results and explain renewable energy technologies to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Wrote and edited content and consulted on design and ease of use for several World Wide Web sites.
- Wrote and edited articles for NREL's internal newsletter, Inside NREL.
- Formed and led a team of communicators from two different NREL centers, coordinating workload, setting priorities, and acquiring additional resources as the team grew.
- Developed and implemented a communications plan for CTTS each year; ensured the editorial quality of all CTTS communications products.
- Rewrote and edited the annual update of NREL's publications policy.
- Acted as editorial quality reviewer and mentor for new communicators.
- Composed, administered, and graded the editing test given to all prospective communicators.
- Wrote a guide to NREL's internal publications process, establishing guidelines that were implemented throughout the laboratory.
- Coauthored a guide to NREL's editorial style that is now distributed to all of NREL's subcontractors.

Checking that all call-outs in text pertain to the correct figure, photograph, plate, or table
Communicating and consulting with the client/author, including answering editorial questions and following up as appropriate or requested
Compiling a comprehensive and detailed style sheet, with explanations of any editorial decisions if needed
Compiling an acronym and/or abbreviations list, if necessary and requested by client
Correcting spelling, punctuation, and grammar
Defining symbols, abbreviations, and acronyms as necessary and appropriate to client’s industry
Editing and proofreading all art; evaluating photos for quality
Editing for parallel construction in headings, subheadings, lists, and captions
Enhancing readability as needed by- Improving clarity, conciseness, and flow
- Inserting transitions between sentences and paragraphs
- Making or suggesting changes to eliminate wordiness or redundancies
- Restructuring or rearranging sentences and paragraphs; suggesting additional changes to solve structural or organizational problems
